Randy Wallock: Owner and Lead Tutor

I began The Broken Pencil Project in downtown Summit, NJ, in 2015.  The company’s name is an ode to the disappointments I felt as a student struggling to succeed in school and the many pencils that met their demise due to my academic frustrations.  I firmly believe that learning should be a challenge, at points even a struggle; however, the mission of The Broken Pencil Project is to utilize school-related stress as a motivator rather than as a barrier.

Two master’s degrees and fifteen years of teaching later, I have overcome my frustration with writing but not forgotten it. My approach to tutoring is informed by my own academic struggles and the resulting empathy I have for struggling writers.

Over my fifteen years as a classroom teacher, private tutor, and curriculum developer, I have worked with many students spanning from elementary through college. This work includes high school honors and advanced placement courses.

My extensive teaching and tutoring experience has provided me with the tools necessary to address students with a wide range of learning challenges.
